Does the job
VG-C3EM 02 May 2022 by MarkyM (United Kingdom)
The main advantage of this grip is obviously better purchase on the body if you have bigger hands, or are using bigger high quality lenses,to help balance out the camera, ability to comfortably use the camera in portrait orientation, and of course have incredible battery duration for a shoot. The grip feels high quality with plenty of duplicate buttons from the main body. The only downside is of course, losing the small compact nature of the Sony Alpha bodies and increased weight.

Completely rectifies any ergonomic issues.
VG-C3EM 05 January 2024 by PNH7 (United Kingdom)
Some people were never keen on the “cramped” ergonomics of the A7III, A9 and A7R III with the smaller grip. Your pinky finger awkwardly dangled off the end and big lenses made the cameras feel very front heavy and didn’t handle great. That said, I love how those cameras are almost pocketable. The vertical battery grip completely resolves most ergonomic issues with that generation of cameras. The camera is beautifully balanced with heavy lenses, your pinky finger sits perfectly in a smooth groove, and it just transforms how the camera handles. The extra lower grip is also excellent to hold with your other hand to steady the camera to ensure sharp images at lower shutter speeds. Made from mostly magnesium with plastic ends, it feels very well made, solid, good in the hand and looks great on the camera with seamless integration. For me, a grip is an essential accessory for these small cameras and gives incredible versatility to transform a very compact body into a solid camera for use with big lenses.

I bought this mainly for the extra battery power which is excellent, and the ease of taking photos in portrait position. Only downside is that it adds extra weight.

Nice grip to get a bit better grip on the camera, but I wish it was more like the a77ii/a99ii grip. I miss a few buttons every once in a while

Froze my Sony A7 III
VGC3EM 19 October 2020 by RodrigoBlanco (USA) Verified Purchaser Verified
I bought this vertical grip to have more battery life. After a few sessions, the camera started malfunctioning and having problems recording the images. I never expected that the origin of the problem was going to be the grip. Fortunately, after going to an elimination process, I found out that the grip was the origin of the issue. Took it off and used a single battery in the camera and now the camera is working fine, not a hitch. Now I'm trying to get it fixed with Sony Support and the whole experience turned out to be a nightmare. Very disappointed. I regret switching to Sony from Nikon.

Endless Power Supply, Easier to Grip Camera
VGC3EM 29 April 2020 by Rich_n_Lukang (USA) Verified Purchaser Verified
I love the extended grip. It feels great in the hand. You have to admit, the a7-III is a small camera, but the grip makes you look like a pro with a huge camera! (That's just a vanity perk!) Seriously, people do tend to take you more seriously seeing that you have a professional looking setup. But it's not just perception. The extra buttons for portrait shots are great for people who aren't contortionists. Also, the added benefit of never running out of battery life is great. I leave my camera on as I walk down streets or trails, or am sitting with friends. The camera is always ready to go. I took the camera on a 1 week long trip with the 2 batteries in the grip and one spare. I never once hooked the camera to a charger and I took tons of pictures. However, since I was rarely around electricity for the trip, I would turn the camera off when I knew it wouldn't be in use. The only problem I have with the grip is that I can't use my LA-EA4 a-mount adapter with the grip installed.

Just What I Needed
VG-C3EM 06 February 2020 by MC Shades (United Kingdom) Verified Purchaser Verified
I bought this grip to aid me when photographing at events like music gigs and festivals. It fits snugly onto the A7RIII body and adds stability while the two battery capacity gives me all the power l need for most shoots. The grip fits well in my hands - I always find l need an extra grip such as a base plate or half case with the A7 series anyway. Moving from landscape to portrait is easy once you get it into your head that arm contortions are no longer needed. This grip does the job well and l am glad to have bought it.

VG-C3EM 12 December 2019 by askallyouwantIdonthaveone (United Kingdom) Verified Purchaser Verified
Been using a Sony a99 until trading up to the a7riii. I have big hands, so I ordered the vertical grip with the camera, as the camera along just feels too small. Add the grip, and it's balanced perfectly. and of course, the benefits of the grips controls become obvious when using portrait as opposed to landscape. Superb addition to a superb camera.

A must have for the a9 or a7 series
VG-C3EM 28 October 2019 by a9Chris (United Kingdom) Verified Purchaser Verified
I bought this at the same time as my a9 as without it the camera felt a little too small in my hands. Coming from a D850 I was used to the chunkier grip of the Nikon, but with the grip my a9 feels perfect and a lot lighter than my previous gear. The extended battery life is great and switching to vertical shooting with a 200-600 G lens attached is smooth. Buttons fall right to hand and the custom buttons function flawlessly. The addition of a lock on the vertical shutter release is a neat idea as it prevents unwanted shots being fire off if the button gets bumped. A card soon gets filled at 20 fps!!!

Great Grip!
VGC3EM 12 May 2019 by Grif80128 (USA) Verified Purchaser Verified
I had read the reviews on the a7Riii and noted the comments on the ergonomics of the grip. I was not surprised when I first held the camera that my little finger dangled in space. I had heeded the comments, bought the battery grip and added it immediately to my camera purchase. Yes, it adds bulk and weight to an otherwise svelte camera. The added sq. inches for my hand is much welcomed! It adds to hand held stability. The second battery is an added benefit. Recommend that if you buy this that you buy two spare batteries. That way you can swap and go! If you're into the looks and status kind of thing-this combination with a large lens will make you the envy of the camera boys!

Easy to accidentally press the trigger button
VG-C3EM//Q SYU 16 November 2018 by WT12 (Singapore)
Having used this for 6 months, I really enjoy the larger grip that this provides but it is always too easy to accidentally press the trigger button while holding it normally. Sometimes I walk about casually and take a few photos without knowing it. Other than that, the extra battery life provided is extremely useful, even though a single battery is more than enough for a daily shoot.

Coming from 15 yo Canon pro stuff, the grip is ok. The battery rack looks very light but ok for the moment. Only thing, i'm very often clicking with the side of my hand, just when picking the camera. It means i must turn of the second button when i use the classical horizontal format. And of course, turn it on for vertical format. I will manage...

Battery grip for A7 and A7R3
VG-C3EM 24 August 2018 by footprint photography (United Kingdom) Verified Purchaser Verified
I have just moved from Lumix to Sony. The Lumix battery grip left the battery in the camera and the grip had the extra battery. This meant that any time you could quickly remove the battery grip and carry on shooting. The Sony product works well on camera but there is much more hassle to attach it to the camera as you have to remove the battery door on the camera, store it in the grip and then slide a new housing into the battery compartment of the camera. In a nutshell this means that you cant just remove the grip and carry on shooting, you have to reattach the door and then put a battery into the camera. Lumix start to finish removing the battery grip and continuing shooting = 3 secs Sony removing battery grip and continuing shooting = appx 1 minute with all the faff of reattaching the battery door (dont drop it or lose it and you are in deep do-do) and inserting a battery For social or landscape shooting this could be fine but for things like weddings or other busy commercial shoots this is unacceptable. If you never plan to remove the battery grip then you can pretty much ignore this review as the product works as it should when on camera.

Build Quality NOT Suitable for Professional Camera
VG-C3EM 27 March 2018 by JMatthewGore (USA)
I've used major brand SLRs for decades, and just switched to Sony. I bought this grip for my A7RIII. In general, the build quality is good (buttons, dials, housing). However, there are a couple of serious issues, and piece of equipment like this is only as good as its weakest part. The more minor of them is that there's no weather sealing between the grip and the camera base or in the battery tray door. This is a serious oversight, considering that Sony didn't properly seal the base of the A7RIII camera, and adding a well-sealed grip could have fixed that problem (luckily, there is at least a seal around the base of the battery insert column). The major problem is the battery tray. The switch to open it feel thin and dangerously weak. The entire tray is thin, brittle feeling plastic, and that includes the compartment cover that forms the left side of the grip. This is the part of the grip that's going to get banged around while you're working (if you're a photojournalist) half the time, and it is thinner and more brittle feeling than even the cheap 3rd-party grips that I've bought for my backup DSLRs in the past. I have no doubt that I'll need to replace it within a year of normal field use. This plastic is quite thin: just 1mm. Unlike the rest of the grip, the "leather" textured portion of it is not rubberized; it's just the same plastic. When I buy a piece of professional equipment, I expect it to feel sturdy and built to last. If I want thin plastic, I can buy the cheap 3rd party knock off. Please tell me, Sony, that this plastic is some kind of super plastic or carbon-fiber reinforced material. I'd like to feel better about keeping it.

A must have for use with bigger lenses.
VG-C3EM//Q SYU 09 January 2018 by cyrilng (Singapore) Verified Purchaser Verified
The battery grip is indispensable for those with large hands and when using with bigger lenses like the 24-70/2.8 for better balance. Battery life is also naturally extended way beyond the already excellent performance of the NP-FZ100. One concern I have is the battery compartment catch release which is unreinforced plastic as I'm not sure how well it will hold up over prolonged use. I would also have MUCH preferred if the batteries could have been oriented horizontally instead of vertically to reduce the height of the grip and overall height when mounted on the camera body. Another great addition would have been the ability to charge the batteries in the grip directly like with the Fuji X-T2 battery grip.

Sony Vertical Grip for A9
VG-C3EM//Q SYU 10 August 2017 by benz68 (Singapore) Verified Purchaser Verified
The vertical grip of the A9 is a must if you shoot lenses like the 100-400mm GM as it kinda balance the whole setup of the camera beautifully . I recently have used it with the 85mm/F1.4 and the balance is very good . Most importantly , you can put 2 batteries inside the grip and that gives u plenty of juice for your shooting before u need to recharge.
