How to troubleshoot camera battery charging issues

If your camera battery won't charge, refer to the Troubleshooting Steps section of this page. If the issue continues, we recommend purchasing a new battery for your camera. To find out which batteries are compatible with your camera, visit the Accessories Compatibility Information website.

    Camera Battery Types

Sony batteries have a letter written on the top to indicate the battery type name.

    • For D, G, K, N, R, T, and X batteries:

    • For H, M, V, W, and Z batteries:

    Troubleshooting Steps

Step 1. Check if the battery is inserted in the right direction.

As shown in the image below, insert the battery pack while pressing the lock lever (A) with the tip of the battery until the battery locks into place.
Note: The image is an example only. For details on inserting the battery, refer to the camera instruction manual.

    • Example of a Z battery type:

Step 2. Check the status of the charging light and battery terminals.

If the CHARGE/Charge lamp flashes or does not light up, the terminal may be dirty or there may be an issue with the battery. Wipe any dirt or fingerprints from the terminal with a dry cloth, then charge the battery again.

Note: Do not touch the battery terminal with your hands or any metal objects.

    • C: This is an example of objects (or other materials) stuck to the terminal.

    Charging Requirements

    • Use Sony-exclusive products for the battery, AC adapter, USB cable, and battery charger. If you use a third-party product, charging may not be carried out properly or may cause a malfunction.
    • If your camera did not include an AC adapter or USB cable, use a commercially available AC adapter and USB cable.
    • If you are using a USB PD (USB Power Delivery) device, please ensure it supports an output of at least 18W (9V/2A).
    • When using a USB AC adapter, ensure it has a rated output of at least 1.5A.
Note: Some commercially available USB AC adapters have their own charging standards and may not be able to charge the battery installed in the camera. (For example, the camera charging lamp lights up for approximately 20 seconds before turning off, and the battery does not charge.) We recommend using a device that supports USB PD (USB Power Delivery).
    • For some cameras with both a Multi/Micro USB terminal and a USB Type-C® terminal, charging via the Multi/Micro USB terminal is not possible. Please use the USB Type-C terminal.

    Notes:

    • The CHARGE/Charge lamp may flash if you charge a battery that has not been charged for a long time or has an extremely low charge level (e.g., immediately after purchase). In this case, remove the battery and charge it again to resolve the issue.
    • Try to recharge the battery in an appropriate environment. You may not be able to charge normally in the following situations:
      • The camera temperature is high after a long video shoot.
      • The ambient temperature is outside the range of 10°C to 30°C (50°F to 86°F).

    Charging Methods

Check the links below for more details on how to charge using different charging methods.

Note: Depending on the model, the charging method or accessories may differ. For details on the charging method, refer to your camera manual.
