JPEG pictures look different than images in the RAW file format when viewed with RAW editing software.

Pictures may not look the same depending on the differences between the processing algorithms used in the camera and those used in different versions of RAW editing software. Every RAW editing software processes images a little differently which can affect sharpness and color, including the Dynamic Range Optimizer (DRO) effect.

Since a RAW file is essentially an undeveloped image, you can use the RAW editing software to make various picture adjustments without degrading the image and then save the file into a more usable format, like JPEG.
