About Automatic Update in Windows Me®.

About Automatic Update in Windows Me®.

Windows Me® obtains the latest components of Windows automatically and updates the system to the latest version transparently to users. Users do not need to search for important updates and information by themselves as Windows identifies updates applicable to the computer and notifies users whenever new updates become available.

Note: To set the Automatic Updates function and download the updates, the VAIO computer needs to be connected to the Internet.

To set the automatic update function:
    1. Click Start, point to Control Panel -> Settings and double-click the Automatic Updates icon.

Note: If the Automatic Updates icon is not displayed in the Control Panel window, click View all Control Panel options on the left of the window.

    2. When the Automatic Updates dialog box appears, click the suitable option button and click OK.

    - Automatically download updates and notify me when they are ready to be installed
Windows finds updates that apply to that computer and download these updates in the background (user is not notified or interrupted during this process). After the download is completed, an icon appears in the taskbar with a message that updates for the computer are ready to be installed. To view and install the available updates, click the icon or the message. Then, select the specific updates to be installed on the computer.

    - Notify me before downloading any updates and notify me again when they are ready to be installed

When Windows finds updates that apply to that computer, an icon appears in the taskbar with a message that updates are ready to be downloaded. After clicking the icon (or the message), user can select the specific updates to download. Windows then download the selected updates in the background. When the download is complete, the icon appears in the taskbar again, notifying that updates for the computer are ready to be installed. Then, select the specific updates to be installed on the computer.

    - Turn off automatic updating. I will update my computer manually

Windows will not update the computer automatically. Automatic updating can be activated any time by selecting one of the first two settings.

Note: When a specific update is selected not to be installed, Windows deletes it from the computer. However, user can click Restore Hidden Items. Any updates that were not selected to be installed in the past but still applicable to the computer will appear the next time Windows notifies of available updates.

Specific updates can always be instaled from the Windows Update Web site.
